Sobsa News Team – Communication for Sex Education Development

The school in Payao is one of the seven Extended Schools in the province who joins a campaign “Youths Combat Teen Pregnancy” have been implemented by Payao Child Development Center. Since 2015-2017, 50 child leaders have trained to be as the Youth leaders and educated about sex education as well as other skills on communication, various media i.e. newspaper, poster, short film etc. For three years, they have formed up “Sobsa News Team” to undertake the activities on creating media and communication – made known to common about sex education more effectively.

At the present time the Sobsa News Team has membered 10 youth leaders joining in undertaking the activities with the support of their teachers in school - by planning and delegating the responsibilities according to a skill of each. An important activity is to create media and generate knowledge about sex education which includes giving a point of view on positive sexual knowledge to the students in school and 200 people in their community. The media they created were Kampaeng newspaper, poster, short film and riddle box for Q&A within school, and other related activities like school radio, school and community rally.

Pacharaporn, one of the Sobsa News Team is responsible for seeking news, interviewing to collect information and presenting the news said that “I am glad to be a youth leader of this issue, I generate the knowledge to the students and parents, and this has widened my point of view on more positive sexual knowledge”.

Another youth leader, Chainarong, who is interested in photography and technology on video editing, is responsible for photographing and editing short films told that I am so proud to have an opportunity to bring out what I have learned from the training to help the team on photographing, creating various media, making all works more interesting and providing more advantages to other people; I don’t feel tired but I am very happy”.

Pinparn is responsible for writing news clipping, searching for information on internet and Rungaroon is responsible for PR, persuades the students to join the activities also gives their point of views that to be the member of the Sobsa News Team, they can improve themselves – gaining more knowledge and skills in many ways. Besides, they can use their leisure in the useful way.

In 2017, the youth leaders have been supported by their school to make a short film “Smart View on Sex Education” and joined a contest held on by the Payao Primary Educational Service Area Office 2 which they won the second prize. This made them great pride as they could bring good reputation to their school.

Ms.Patcharee, a teacher who is responsible for the school activities, has given some comments that school is an important part, is able to support the students to undertake such a good activity and useful to their learning. According to Moderate Class, More Knowledge - the students had to do something for themselves; normally they would learn about sex education from textbooks and that might be too boring and when the team has launched a campaign on “Youths Combat Teen Pregnancy” the school has supported the youth leaders in creating media to supplement and carry out this activity; and this has drawn attention from all the students, they showed their responses – raised issues and asked more questions. From this activity the youth leaders have gained more skills on various terms i.e. presentation, media creation and a good teamwork.

The story of the Sobsa News Team is just one of the methods to promote youths to develop their leadership skill, and volunteer to share their knowledge to children and youths in their community.  Your support allows CCF Thailand to move forward with our activities.  Thank you to our DONORS.
